John Allen Cockerell MD

What is your home town?

Texarkana, TX.

Where did you attend medical school?

UAMS.

What other educational credentials do you have?

BS in Biology from Ouachita Baptist University.

What are your particular clinical interests?

I enjoy both inpatient and outpatient medicine, though I am most interested in outpatient clinical medicine. In that setting, I am able to diagnose and treat a variety of issues while establishing long term rapport with patients. I also enjoy medicine that promotes community advocacy and prevention.

Why did you choose Family Medicine?

I knew that I wanted to enter Family Medicine since early college. I was fortunate at that time to see the field performed well by excellent family doctors. Family Medicine gives you a broad sampling of medical diseases and allows you to care for patients in a variety of ways. It is that combination of relationship with patients and numerous medical conditions that drew me to the field.

Why did you choose the Little Rock Family Medicine residency program?

I choose this program because it stands alone as the flagship Family Medicine residency of the state with a strong reputation for academics and patient care. This residency sees some of the most challenging and rewarding cases in the state, as UAMS is the largest hospital in the area. Little Rock itself is a wonderful city that drew me in as well. There are surprising amounts of culture, diversity, and great restaurants here. Overall it is a young and outdoor-oriented city with some beautiful scenery and friendly folks.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of medicine?

I have a wide range of interests and find many things to occupy my time. I love my family and friends, and I enjoy spending time with them in any setting. We are particularly fond of cooking and trying new foods together. I thoroughly enjoy traveling and really anything in the great outdoors, including hunting, fishing, and hiking. I love to kayak and camp as well. I enjoy pretty much all kinds of music, but bluegrass and alternative rock are among the favorites.
